The poet, author, aphorist, and translator Christian Otto Josef Wolfgang Morgenstern (1871–1914) is perhaps now best known for his nonsense literature and aphorisms. However many of his poems were set to music by such composers as Erik Bergman, Sofia Gubaidulina, Hanns Eisler, Paul Graener, Friedrich Gulda,  Robert Kahn, Yrjö Kilpinen, Paul Hindemith, Matyas Seiber, Siegfried Strohbach, and Graham Waterhouse.
