Eliot, Adam Bede, 1st edition (1859)

George Eliot, Adam Bede (London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1st edn. 1859) vol i: [viii], 325; vol. ii: [viii], 374; vol. iii: [viii], 333.

Duodecimo. Three-quarter contemporary leather binding with marbled boards and marbled endpapers.

All three volumes show the publisher's original 'The Right of Translation is reserved' on the full-title. This is often lost during subsequent binding from the publisher's standard cloth issue. During binding, vol. iii's statement has been shaved so that it is only just visible (see images), but this is due not to a binder's error but rather to a compositor's: he added too much leading and created a larger 'drop' from the colophon to the statement than is found in the other volumes.
